Washable vs traditional – for the rooms where wool fails

The two-piece washable rug (Ruggable, Tom Tailor, Lorena Canals) is the newest category on Amazon.co.uk and the fastest-growing. It is not a wool-rug replacement – it is a bath-mat-scaled-up. Here is where each belongs.

What washable does better
- Households with kids and pets. Milk, mud, sick, urine – cover comes off, cold wash, air dry, on again in six hours. No professional cleaner to book.
- Kitchens. Cooking oil splashes, tea drips, and everything a fitted kitchen throws at floor level. A wool rug in this zone is a lost cause; a washable rug lasts.
- Rentals. Move-out cleaning is a wash cycle instead of a professional deep clean invoice.
What traditional does better
- Read as designed. A wool berber or a Persian repeats read as furniture. A printed polyester cover reads as convenience.
- Underfoot. Wool at 12 mm pile is not comparable to a 3 mm polyester print on a Cling pad. Bare feet in December will notice.
- Longevity per pound. A £300 wool rug lasts 20 years; two Ruggable covers over the same period cost £360 and never feel the same.

Does a Ruggable really fit a UK washing machine?
Only up to 150 × 210 cm on a 7 kg drum, and only if you fold it lengthwise into a loose S. Larger sizes go to a launderette. The Cling Pad stays flat under the rug – never washes.
How many washes before the backing fails?
Ruggable and Tom Tailor list 20 washes; independent long-term reviews on Amazon.co.uk report noticeable non-slip degradation around 15 washes for polyester layers, 25+ for the newer chenille lines. Air-dry only – tumble drying halves the backing life.
Can a traditional wool rug be washed at home?
No. Wool felts under mechanical agitation and shrinks 5–15% on the first wet cycle. Traditional rugs are professionally wet cleaned every 12–18 months – expect £3–£6 per m² through a Rug Doctor plant or a local specialist.
Our verdict
Own both, in different rooms. Washable in the kitchen, playroom and pet zone – where spills are certain and design is secondary. Traditional in the sitting room, bedroom and formal dining – where the rug is part of the design and gets one professional clean a year. Trying to make a Ruggable serve as a sitting-room centrepiece, or a wool rug survive a family kitchen, wastes the money you spent on either.
