Every rug stain is a race between the fibre and the pigment. What you do inside the first 15 minutes decides whether the rug survives – and what you should never reach for depends entirely on the rug material.

The six household stains, with protocol

Red wine

Urgency: very high · Act within: 15 min

Key product: White wine or soda water + salt (immediate); enzyme cleaner (dry stain)

Olive oil & cooking grease

Urgency: high · Act within: 60 min

Key product: Bicarbonate of soda (absorb 20 min) + washing-up liquid diluted

Tomato sauce & pasta stains

Urgency: very high · Act within: 20 min

Key product: Cold water + washing-up liquid + white vinegar 3:1

Pet urine (dog & cat)

Urgency: very high · Act within: 30 min

The four-material rulebook

Before you reach for any product, know your rug. Applying oxygen bleach to a wool berber ruins it in one wash; the same bleach saves a polypropylene shaggy from a red wine spill.

Material	Universal rule
Wool	Cold water only. No bleach. No ammonia. Blot, do not rub. Professional wet clean after big incidents.
Polypropylene	Handles most solvents including oxygen bleach. Machine wash under 120 × 160 cm. No hot iron.
Jute / sisal	Absolute minimum water. Powder cleaners preferred (bicarbonate, dry cleaning powder). Blot with towel weighted.
Washable (Ruggable-style)	Cover off, cold wash 30 °C, air dry. Do not tumble dry (backing distorts). Cling pad never washed.

What is the golden rule for any rug stain?

Act inside 15 minutes for pigmented liquids (wine, tomato, coffee, urine), inside 60 minutes for grease, and blot from the outside in – never scrub, and never use hot water on a fresh stain (heat sets most rug stains permanently).

Which one product covers most household stains?

When do I stop and call a professional?
