How to remove pet urine from a rug

Protocol by rug material

On wool (natural, hand-tufted, Persian, berber)

1. Blot dry with thick paper towels, weighted, for 5 minutes.

On polypropylene (shaggy, budget flatweave)

1. Blot dry.
2. Enzyme cleaner 15 minutes; blot.
3. Rinse cold water; blot dry.
4. Persistent odour: sprinkle bicarbonate overnight; vacuum.
5. If the rug has an underlay foam pad, replace the pad – urine soaks in and re-releases smell.

On jute or sisal (natural fibre)

1. Blot fast, weighted.
2. Enzyme cleaner but MINIMAL volume – dab on a cloth then press onto the stain, do not soak the jute.
3. Bicarbonate absorb overnight; vacuum.
4. Second incident: replace the rug. Jute cannot be deep-cleaned without water damage.

On a machine-washable rug (Ruggable, Tom Tailor)

1. Blot dry through the cover into the Cling pad below (yes, it soaks through).
2. Cover off. Rinse under cold tap 2 minutes.
3. Pre-soak 30 minutes cold water + enzyme cleaner (1 tbsp per litre).
4. Cold wash 30 °C. Air dry.
5. Also wipe the Cling pad with enzyme cleaner and a damp cloth – never machine-wash the pad.
