How to remove coffee & tea from a rug

Protocol by rug material

On wool (natural, hand-tufted, Persian, berber)

1. Blot immediately with dry towel from outside in.
2. Cold water spray; blot.
3. Fairy Liquid + cold water + 1 tsp white vinegar; dab; blot.
4. Dry stain: Woolite Rug Stain Remover. Not oxygen bleach on wool.
5. Tannin ring at edges: repeat vinegar solution on the ring only.

On polypropylene (shaggy, budget flatweave)

1. Blot.
2. Cold water + Fairy Liquid; dab.
3. Dry stain: Vanish Oxi Action solution, 1 scoop / 250 ml warm water, 10 minutes contact, rinse, blot.
4. Stubborn: Dr Beckmann Carpet Stain Remover, 5 minutes contact.

On jute or sisal (natural fibre)

1. Blot fast, weighted.
2. Bicarbonate absorb 30 minutes; vacuum.
3. Residual: mist cold water + white vinegar 3:1 on cloth, dab, weight dry.
4. Tannin ring likely permanent on jute.

On a machine-washable rug (Ruggable, Tom Tailor)

1. Blot excess.
2. Cover off. Cold rinse.
3. Pre-soak 15 minutes in Vanish Oxi Action White solution.
4. Cold wash 30 °C. Air dry.
