How to wash a machine-washable rug in a UK washer

Step-by-step

  1. Peel the cover from the Cling pad. Start at one corner – the whole cover lifts in one motion. The pad stays on the floor.
  2. Shake outside. 30 seconds over a bin, both sides. Removes grit that would otherwise shred the print in the drum.
  3. Pre-treat stains. Apply a small amount of Fairy Liquid or Vanish Oxi Action (never on the pad, only on the cover). Rub gently with fingers. Leave 15 minutes.
  4. Fold cover loosely lengthwise into a soft S shape. Do not roll – creates uneven wash.
  5. Load ALONE. Never wash with other laundry. Rug covers are heavy when wet (5–8 kg) and unbalance the drum.
  6. Cold cycle 30 °C, gentle or delicate. Half dose of non-bio detergent. NO fabric softener (coats the backing and reduces grip).
  7. Extra rinse. Reduces detergent residue that would otherwise attract dirt.
  8. Spin low (600–800 rpm). High spin cracks the rubberised backing print.
  9. Air dry flat. Laundry rack, bath rail, garden line. UK indoor: 12–18 hours in summer, 24–36 in winter. Do NOT tumble dry.
  10. Re-lay on the pad. Start from one edge, smooth outward with the flat of a hand. Cling adheres in a minute.

The pad never enters the washing machine. Wipe with a damp cloth and a drop of Fairy Liquid every three or four wash cycles. Rinse cloth thoroughly, dry the pad fully before laying the cover back on. Pad lifespan: 7–10 years if never washed.

Can I tumble dry a Ruggable?

No. The Cling backing distorts, the rubberised print cracks, and Ruggable specifically voids the warranty on tumble-dried covers. Air dry flat on a laundry rack or over the bath rail. UK indoor drying: 12–18 hours.

How often should I wash it?

Every 6–8 weeks for a kitchen rug, every 3–4 months for a living room, immediately after any pet accident or food spill. Realistic cover lifespan: 15–20 washes before the print or backing shows fatigue.
